[Openstreetmap] Where can I get old street maps?

I've got a copy of the original 1914 Crown Copyright 1:2500 map for my area
(Sutton Coldfield) which I photocopied at the local library a few years ago.
It has street names for the time.
Now this is the same map which I also have published in 1993 by Alan Godfrey
Maps, Dunston, Gateshead. On the back of the latter is a statement that
gives thanks to Roger Hellyer for his help and permission to reprint the
map. I can only assume therefore that the high quality reproduction came
about by borrowing someone's map rather than obtaining from the OS.
Now is this all fair game? If so I would digitize it and use the image to
create data in AutoCAD which I can then convert to GPX (and beyond).
Has anyone spoken to Alan Godfrey Maps?
I have other historical maps but that's another discussion. You would also
be surprised what your local library generally holds. You can also get a lot
of detail from other library sources, electrol roll data for info.
