what about clean-room reverse engineering.
in that case, you'd need 2 people take a map with the boundaries, get a 
couple of radios, and the one with the map describes to the other 
individual (that has the gps) how to get to the remarkable points (which 
get stored as waypoints)
I understand this is convoluted...
