I can't emphasise this enough, and I'm really sorry I haven't had time
to fix it. There is a bug about it assigned to me in bugzilla, but I
probably won't get to it until next month if I'm honest. (An OSM
person-day takes about 3-4 weeks for me, and there's easily a day's work
to be done on the applet before we release another version).
The text size should scale with the road size though, so use +/- to fix
that. When we pick some fixed scales (the same ones that are used in
Steve's draggable tiles interface, coming soon) then we can pick
sensible line widths for each scale, and this all becomes easier. We
also plan to limit the scales at which the editor is linked to, so that
you can only edit at sensible levels of detail.

Yeah, that's fairly easy to do, but really you should just make the
nodes/lines bigger with +/-. I can't emphasise this enough, either.
