Ways can contain arbitrary segments, which do not have to be connected.
I try and avoid disconnected ways, but "Y"- and "E"- and "O"- and "K"-shaped
ways are useful for small roads in housing estates, which tend to branch out a
bit ;-). A simple example, even for a straight road with no forks, I usually put
the turning area at the end of most housing estate roads, but it is included in
the same way.
