[OSM-talk] Serial to USB for GPS downloading

Naïve question for a Friday.
Can I download GPX files from my Garmin etrex Venture which has a serial connection to a USB-only computer (ie no serial port).
I have been doing downloads succesfully through work PC using this serial cable, and using GPSbabelwrapper (via Quakemake) - ie serial, com1. etc and all is fine and dandy. Now I need to be able to do so on home PC. I have brought a serial to USB cable but everything I have tried on GPSbaelwrapper and GPSbabel has failed.
Can anyone give me step-wise clues as to setup that I need to use?
Failing this it is week's holiday for me with no GPSing (boo-hoo!) and no data for OSM for while!

Cheers
STEVE
