[OSM-talk] Direct GPS serial read - another idea

Following on from the earlier "direct serial read from JOSM" thread, it
turns out that there might be some serious issues with this at the moment
such as lack of Linux support.
So I've thought of another alternative which would combine GPS read and
GPX upload in one step, namely a custom application (a custom GUI
application based on the GPSbabel libs) allowing the user to read from the
device, specify tags for the trace and upload the trace to OSM. It could
also have simple track editing facilities e.g. edit out deviations from
your intended route such as getting lost in a field, for instance.
Then people would go into JOSM (or potlatch, the applet, merkaartor, or
whatever) separately to actually draw the tracks.
Sound a good idea? Any other thoughts?
Nick
