It was this - setting a unique ID for each map resulted in multiple .img files 
being sent successfully.

Using the updated osm2mpx.xml, I have altered osm2garmin so that each 
generated .img file has a different ID. The result of this is that osm2garmin 
is now able to download OSM data in tiles and then transfer it all to your 
GPS.

Other new features today: the location of the cgpsmapper and sendmap 
executables can be specified on the command line.
