I've used a similar technique.  Just a couple of unconnected and
untagged nodes at the end of a road leading off in the right general
direction.  It's very useful to indicate that you know there is a road
there but haven't surveyed it yet.  Thomas's technique has the
advantage that it appears on the rendered map, where as solitary nodes
do not.
