This is a potential problem. Again IANAL, but I would have thought it would be 
ok to use a map for planning purposes. However, the risk here is that people 
doing the Ramblers exercise might not be very au fait with the free mapping 
(or libre, full stop) philosophy and there is the risk that the  class of 
path could be copied into OSM from the map.

Such an exercise would require making it absolutely clear to anyone performing 
the exercise what is acceptable and what isn't. Induction via thorough 
browsing of the OSM website would be a useful start :-)

Might be worth my while going through the Ramblers guy I met at Limehouse, 
since he is familiar with OSM and the copyrihgt issues.
