Yes, but I was really just suggesting dispensing with a filesystem and writing
to it in a long stream.

http://www.globalsat.co.uk/product_em406.htm is the sort of thing I was
considering. They sell USB dongles with them & a USB-serial converter in them
for £50, so the OEM module can't be too much - If the worst comes to the
worst, buy a USB dongle and crack it open.

I concur that in reality you'd only get very minor advantages over the
navigps, those being very slightly lower cost, and a sirf III rather than a
sirf II/unknown. And you'd get a lot of disadvantages over a navigps.
