[OSM-talk] How to extend a way?

One problem linked to this is gaining all the segments associated with in 
existing way (which I believe you need to be able to upload the altered way, 
at least in JOSM).

Say for example the way was the M6 (reasonalby long British motorway). Other 
than trying to either work out a load of small downloads to track the length 
of the way or downloading a large percentage of the UK (probably ending up 
with a section of France as well), is there any easy way to cause any of the 
offline clients to download all segments of an existing way regardless of 
area?

Also, different ways are likely to be started in different areas all providing 
part of the total, is there anyway to merge ways?

I guess the answer is "no" for now, though I can see things like this becoming 
quite important to those trying to create/extend long ways.
