Yes, the use of namespaces would enable both a rigid schema (such as Map
Features) and other personal or specialised schema to live together.  I'd
really like to see all Map Features tags (highway= etc) prefixed with mf:.

Now that Imi has given us the Annotation Presets for JOSM it should be easy
to add mf: without requiring more keystrokes from everyone.
