Those people might not read the wiki at all and use copyrighted maps as
source. I thought of a simple web interface to edit street names, but what
would this lead to?
Without proper review and version control, that will most probably end in
utter chaos. Even a small percentage of people with malicious intent is
hard to handle.

I don't think OSM has reached a state where "ordinary" people should edit
something, yet. It's not ready. For the future, it might be very useful to
allow people to edit street names and POIs via web2.0 interface. We could
call this website Mappr then ;)
D'oh, that name is already taken.

A concept will evolve, eventually. Perhaps layered maps, with separate
databases for verified map content and one for user supplied
things. What we need now most is not single street names, but more core
content (roads, waypoints, etc.). People who simply want to edit street
names do not run away, there are lots out there, and when OSM is big and
popular enough, it's a matter of days to get all names right. Those who
provide core content will not be scared away by having to open an account.
