Well I try not to say that because it might seem like it can never be
done automatically. You don't want to be a Luddite, right? But I feel
basically the same way, it's wrong.

So I tried using osmfilter, to simplify, and JOSM, to upload, and it
seems to be working. Though there are some really rough edges, not
sure if they were because of user error or not. But JOSM bailed out in
the middle of segment creation so I've uploaded 600 nodes which does
not have segments connecting them... ;-)

So for people who do motorways I do believe that automatic creation is
viable real soon now. It doesn't manage to do exit ramps right now,
but maybe later.  Seeing Nick Blacks Kernel density map[1], made me
think that that's the way to do it in areas like exit ramps and inner
city areas like London, Köpenhamn and Oslo. "Just" create segments on
the ridges.
