That works (i.e. it generates "ø"s in the PDF) but looks wrong to me -- e.g. 
why are we decoding utf8 instead of encoding it?  Is perl even guaranteed to 
be using utf8 internally?  Why doesn't the simpler "corefont('Helvetica', 
-encode=>"utf8")" work?

If someone with more i18n knowledge than me could take a look, that might be 
useful - perhaps we can think of more complex symbols to test it with?
