We've kind of had this conversation before.  People already using the
mailing list and the wiki cannot and will not see the point of a
forum.  Discussing the pros and cons of one on either of these
platforms won't get a sensible response from the 'pro' side because
they don't like email or wikis!

And honestly, why should I have to indent replies and sign posts on a
talk page?  Forums take care of all of that.  I'd use one, if it was
properly set up and well maintained... I agree with Richard that given
its newbie focus it should share sign-on with openstreetmap.org (as
should the wiki, which I believe supports auth plug-ins - anyone?)
