Not sure if this has been thrashed out in any way before (point me somewhere
if it has) but Mapchester has caused me to rethink the urgency of what is
needed to be able interface waypoints to nodes (or potential nodes) in the
db.
At the weekend the majority of new GPS users (and the majority were new to
GPS) recorded the names of streets by hand (writing them down) but
referenced their location at the time by inserting a numbered waypoint. So
we now have these number referenced "points" in the gpx files and a large
set of hand written sheets. Very very few of the Mapchester contributors
will be editing their own data.
So what's the simplest way to implement an editing interface for these
"points". The points might or might not be imported into the tracks table of
the database (have not checked if they are or not) but certainly the
reference for the point is not.
In JOSM (or other offline editor) it would presumably be relatively simple
to render a waypoint differently to a trackpoint and then have the ability
to view or use the associated waypoint data. Thus opening the original
tracklog gpx file (rather than a download from the server) would gain
potential access to the additional data present. Of course it also relies
upon imi being back from his travels and with time to implement something
like this over anything else he has on his plate.
Anyway, if anyone has any ideas how this might best be implemented, even
crudely, so that we can have editors make use of the waypoint data. The hand
logs taken are currently being scanned (pdf's prob), so should be available
to editors in the next week or so.
I should point out also that several turned up with digital cameras and
SteveC has all of these image sets tied to the gpx log name so in theory
editors will have access to these at some point too.
Cheers,
Andy
