Nick's cited my railway atlas, but I'd also add:

If you're unsure as to whether a UK canal is navigable or not (or  
under restoration), do drop me a line - knowing about that is what I  
do for the day-job.

Otherwise, though, I'd agree that (generally) the NPE isn't the sole  
source for most information. Where I find it really helpful is in  
providing the course for roads/railways/etc. which I know exist,  
having travelled along them at one point, but for which I don't have  
a GPS track.
