Richard has done an excellent map of the UK railways, past and present, 
that you can check against:

I tag my ways / features with "source=NPE", and I tag my GPX files with 
NPE as one of the tags

The other dead giveway is that the timestamps on the GPX points are the 
1st of January 1950. (When we have the A revision of the 7th edition 
scanned in and out of copyright, I'll probably tag those with 1955.)
