[OSM-talk] Russia free for the taking

This time last year, I found existing tracks in Russia
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/User:LA2/Diary_for_Q4_2005
that had been uploaded and then abandoned. I took on to draw line
segments for the 1000 km road between St Petersburg and Murmansk
and for other roads going out east and south of St Petersburg, as
well as tracks through Finland and Estonia. I have not been there
and don't know which types of roads these are, and at the time
there was very little support for anything except simple line
segments.

The current tile renderer doesn't render anything for simple line
segments, that have no ways or attributes, so these roads will
remain invisible. I have seen no other people actively drawing
roads in these areas, outside of urban St Petersburg. I'm not
going back there. If I can regain any energy at all, I might work
on the map in Sweden.

An old plot can be found on the page for "Wikiproject Russia",
