This may not help you, but my method at first was to zoom in on some
GPX points, test the water with a download of OSM data and zoom out
gradually.  Once I realised this involved loading a GPX I understood
what the bookmark/favourite thing was for on the download dialog box.
I bookmarked my home view and always use that to start.  At least it
gives you some sense of scale as you zoom in and out.

Quite. I accidentally mistook my Devon to London GPX track for a local
one and ended up loading all of Bristol, which I had assumed was a
junction in Oxford.
