I think that's the thing - it would take complex maths to do anything 
useful with the trace.
Way back in the early days, osmeditor used to do a 1:1 conversion from gpx 
points to nodes. That was then followed by a painful manual process of 
deleting excess nodes. As soon as I tried out the 'draw over GPX' method 
instead, it was much, much easier :-)
