I think the wiki approach wins as it uses an online interface (suppose a 
wikipedia without the edit tab, and several, not easy to install, offline 
editors). The same strength should be in OSM and a simple way is in improving 
the applet or in rewriting it. If the main problem is the interaction with 
the server, the applet could limit it to a first sync and a final commit of 
changed data as offline editors do.
