Actually the next event section should show that the project is active. 
I suspect that it will need room for more than one event as well. 
Perhaps a small calendar block on the left which links to the events 
diary - along with the next event on the right ( A javascript display of 
an event from the calendar as you move over each would be good but that 
is something for later )

As for actually input. I would have thought a simple 'Number of miles of 
routes added' and a date would be more than enough for the front page 
with a link to the recent activity page? This could be managed on a 
country by country basis as well later and would fit nicely by the 
country select on the bottom bar.
