Paul,
Pleased to hear you have taken an interest in OSM.
To my mind your question can be answered in two ways. Firstly for map
rendering we only need to see the junction reference once. Therefore simply
a node adjacent to the junction with a highway=motorway_junction and ref=J6
should do the trick. Additionally for navigational use you might tag the
nodes leaving the motorway (where the motorway connects with the exit slip)
with a similar tag with the ref containing something line ref=J6N_Exit. You
could also do the same for the entry sliproads where they leave the other
designated highway, like ref=J6S_Entry
