A couple of the comments are on the slowness of the tileserver,
unfortunately I think this is a valid and genuine criticism, if you
want OSM to look viable you have to be usable to joe-random-surfer.

Are there any plans to speed the server up by load
balancing/pre-rendering tiles or some other such technique.

I've got a fair bit of unused web-space at the moment that I'd be
happy to use for caching tiles. Or, depending on the server
requirements, perhaps even running a secondary or tertiary tile
server.
