(slightly off the topic, but I wanted to qualify the statement below...)

Your changes have to be GPL'd but *only if you release your modified 
GPL'd software to the public*. If you are just hacking GPL'd software 
privately, you do not have to release your changes.

I know that's probably what you meant in this context, just wanted to 
correct any potential GPL misunderstanding :)
