I've been doing some tests on Firefox 2.0 rc1 and have made the following
observations:
1. Text along a path is rendered which is an improvement
2. The baseline-offset attribute is ignored which means that the text is not
centred along the path
3. Initial loading of a map, even with a lot of street names is relatively
quick (well, not slow).
4. Zooming or panning is very slow (20 - 30 seconds) and is several times
slower than re-loading the page.
5. Just moving the cursor over the map (when it contains lots of street
names) consumes an unexpectedly large amount of cpu.

4 and 5 are much slower for a map with street names than for a similar map
without names. I will logs both of these as bugs with Firefox guys.

Doesn't work in IE/Adobe SVG Viewer by the way (neither the XHTML+SVG
