Aren't "others" simply those who used another name? Oh I see, the name
is not really a session attribute but could theoretically be different
for every object I send, right? But if the whole thing were to go live
with a built-in upload-to-OSM-server capability, then you'd have to add
a session management, checking OSM username/password against the OSM
server anyway, and that would then set the "Your Name Here" bit to the
username, and then you'd know who the "others" were.

You are right, it isn't required. I was under the impression that it
was, because JOSM does insert these, but it also works without.
