Yep. Its common in a housing estate for a road to have branches and even
loops in it. Its also not unknown for a road to have the same name and have
another road between them, making a gap in the road. Its possible to create
a way that logically represents the road and most of the time renderers can
cope with most kinds of ways thrown at them and you don't notice, But
sometimes things don't work as you'd expect & when you dig down this issue
crops up!,

The problem is that arbitrarily complex ways are a pain for renderers,
(where do you put the road name? What if parts of the road are one-way or
have specific attributes ...), so there's been a kind of compromise & sort
of unwritten rule that when you make up a way, to do it with simple,
non-branching ways that have the same name (there is no other grouping - its
been discussed on the list :-) superways!).
