This is starting to sound ridiculous.  I'm not sure what this 
fight is about, but the reference to UK law seems out of place.

UK data protection law has to follow European Commission 
directives.  The UK must allow businesses and organizations the 
freedom to process and use personal data, or else this would be a 
trade barrier.  The EC's requirement is that people give consent.  
After that, almost anything is allowed, very little is "illegal".  
So please don't blame UK data protection law.  All OSM needs to do 
is to ask consent of each new contributor who signs up.
