I have no knowledge of when or why it was added, or how it's currently
used, but I would assume that is for marking the location of an historic
icon!

I would suspect there aren't many of these in the UK, but in Southern
and Eastern Europe, for example, where Orthodoxy is more prevalent,
they're much more common. When I was in Охрид earlier this year, I
visited the Church of St. Clement which also has, in its grounds, what
is considered to be the greatest collection of icons outside of Moscow:

If this _isn't_ what the feature is for, then it certainly needs to be
made much more explicit what it *is* for.
