me too, absolutely. But the cgpsmapper license is rather expensive. I wonder 
if it was possible to get the information about the file format anywhere 
else.

I guess it was to much of data. Additionally, you should grant the java 
virtual machine an extra portion of memory (something like java -mx1024m -jar 
mkgmap.jar myboundingbox.osm).
