Emphasising the word "naughty" and to change the subject completely,
regarding the proposed Lake District weekend (and any others in similar
hill country) I think it will be necessary for people to carry OS or other
maps with them, simply because it can be somewhat dangerous to go into
mountainous areas without them ("Always carry a map" is the standard
advice) - this will be particularly true for people with little experience
of walking in this sort of terrain.
I know this has come up before, but I can't see that planning a route on a
map will be seen as a copyright violation - if this was the case, no route
planned with a road atlas could be uploaded to OSM. What would be a
copyright violation would be to copy information from the map, such as the
class of right of way.
I think the sensible line, if we aren't to be the cause of fatalities
involving people falling off mountains, will be to take the line "it's OK
to use an OS map to plan a route or to find where you are in an emergency
- but you mustn't *copy* any information off it e.g. route class or
mountain name". That seems a sensible compromise between safety issues and
avoiding violating copyright. Sounds sensible?
