OK, I've done that and now see why it's such a problem - I wasn't
thinking before!

Well, I'd already done the first steps (followed by thresholding to give
me a plain binary image). It sounds like the best way to go from there -
given that these aren't very large maps - is to manually trace the
centre of roads /paths to get the vectors. Is there any particular
(*nix) software you'd recommend for that, that would simplify reaching
my goal of an osm format output?
(I know it sounds like it would be simpler using gps but the problem is
that most of the ways in the town(s) are narrow and run between
high-sided buildings - signal strength is nil or gives very bad resolution)

What input formats does postgis accept (I've never used this and their
link to documentation is returning a 'bad gateway' message)
And Mysql???? I'm guessing just a cut-and-past remainder?
