I did my own implementation in PHP based on how the GD version of 
lowzoom.pl works. What advantage is there in using imagemagick? Is the 
output any different?

Tiles are uploaded to the repository on dev as soon as they are 
generated so they show up immediately. Is this acceptable or should I 
disable it for now?
