In theory we could do a quick look up to see if data exists (count(*)).
The code is in svn to hack on...

This may be a server load, browser or openlayers issue. openlayers
sometimes shows the wrong tiles or broken ones, but so does gmaps. Your
guess is as good as mine :-)
