Maybe this helps for you: Having gpsdrive latest(svn) installed or 
http://svn.openstreetmap.org/ you can do osm-subset.pl --area=UK
This would doenload (anonymously) the latest planet and shrink it down to only 
the OK. The result can then be found in ~/osm/planet/
