[OSM-talk] osm2shp update, and dbf format

The osm2shp application is now updated so that one column in the dbf file is created for each tag in the input OSM data.
This does raise a question. The generated dbf files seem quite large, as there are a large number of columns which are redundant for most data. However, this might not matter too much as the .dbf can be compressed to a fraction of the size. The alternative would be to define a set of standard POI types with mappings to OSM tags. What do people think are best?
