We use a size of either 32x32 or 16x16. You might want to have a look at 
  http://www.ostertag.name/gpsdrive/map-icons/
for an overview or in the osm-svn at
  http://svn.openstreetmap.org/map-icons/
These should be a good start for icons to use with navigation and mapping.
The index files are a little bit out of date, but D.S.E. is working on it.
in the overview page you can see the three icon themes 
 - square.big(32x32)
 - square.small(16x16)
 - classic(32x32 transparent)
