OK, "stage 2" is done - nodes are now rotated around their barycentre so that
they are positioned on the line that is perpendicular to the tangent of the
road's curve.

It seems to work well - I've tested on some sections of the A14 (not uploaded)
and am very pleased with the results so far. Lots more to do, though ;-) ---
suggestions welcome!

JAR and patch files have been updated at the same locations.
