You CAN convert a GPX file straight to OSM data but we don't recommend
it, especially in areas where data already exists.
Personally, I add nodes and segments that follow the GPX data but are
less frequent so they still show the same shape.
This also allow me to correct for any known GPS drift, junctions, when
I'm passing other cars.
