[OSM-talk] advertising

I think the ads are a great idea - and remember the ads go away if you
log in - like the old google ads. (I do think we should give it a go
for a while at least)

That saying, the map on openstreetmap.org is *the* map that we show
folks, that people look at to see what openstreetmap is about, where
people who want to know what osm is go to. The data has been
collected, edited and even rendered by us.

I think mappam is ideally suited to mashups, and also third party
openstreetmap sites. It has a definate place, and I'm very sure it
will take off.

I think the main point that people are vocalising is that they feel
ownership over the map on openstreetmap.org - have produced it and are
proud of it.

They feel more upset of this map advertising (even though it's a
really tiny small icon) than a large block of google ads on the
"normal" html part of the page, because it is not just over any old
map, it's over the map they've worked on. The openstreetmap map is
what's valuable.

Regards

Tim
