What about having a look at the already existing hierarchy in our map-icons? 

svn.openstreetmap.org/applications/share/map-icons/square.big/shopping
svn.openstreetmap.org/applications/share/map-icons/square.big/food

we could use this existing hierarchy and expand/adapt it.
