[OSM-talk] Annouce : Planet incremental search

Hi,

I've just compiled and run gosmore for the first time. I'm very
impressed. It really is a dirty hack, with almost no user interface, no
structure in the code, you don't always know what it does, sometimes it
just hangs, it doesn't do umlauts - but it works! It is only 1024 lines
of C++ code, it uses only 64 MB of memory, and I can actually load up
the whole of Germany and zoom and pan to my heart's content, faster than
anything that uses pre-rendered tiles.

This is amazing. The 360 MB Germany OSM file needs about 56 MB in the
format created by gosmore (that's 85% compression) - there's no reason
why, with a suitably adapted gosmore, you cannot carry the whole planet
file with you on your PDA and view any part of it instantly.

I wouldn't have thought this was possible. Of course the rendering is
not as nice as done by proper rendering software, it looks more like
those typical Garmin maps, and there are tons of little things that one
would like to see improved but on the whole... thumbs up!

Bye
Frederik
