The key to that is patience. Don't expect mapnik to be quick, and don't expect 
level 1-11 osmarender tiles anytime soon.

It's a matter of data projection. You can find wealths of information about 
that in the wikipedia (short version: "how many ways of flattening the 
surface of the earth can you find?").

Go to the JOSM preferences, third tab, named "map settings". Play with 
the "projection method" setting. Enjoy.
