In a similar case at work, I put a hardware RAID (ICP Vortex GDT, don't
know if it is available any more) controller into the server and used LVM
and reiserfs (which can be grown while being in use) on the resulting
"disc".

Much like t at h, the data that is on the disc set can be reproduced quickly
but downtime is not acceptable to my users. When disc space gets low, I
plug another disc into the RAID, let it rebuild itself and grow the
reiserfs. My users just see that they have another 300GB to play with ;-)
