The day before yesterday, I drove to Herstmonceux, a charming small
village in West Sussex, which I had previously mapped a reasonable
proportion of. The village centre used to be a road junction. It still
is. I can still drive to the same part of the village, and when I get
there, it's fairly obvious that I'm in the centre of the village; I'm
surrounded by shops and a pub.
However, since I was last there, the local council have deemed it
necessary to remodel the junction to include a pedestrian crossing and a
mini roundabout where the "give way" junction used to be. I don't blame
them, it was a terrible junction, and difficult to cross safely to get
to the village school.
So, I'm left with a dilemma. Do I move the centre of the village just
because the it's now complemented by a mini roundabout,
or do I leave out the rather useful fact that there's a mini roundabout
where you may need to turn off the A271 to reach one of the other
streets (and that's just after a new pedestrian crossing)?
