Hmm, in some parts of the world the church is considered the centre of
the town (if you didn't have a church you wern't a town). And in
Australia at least all distances are measured from the central post
office. Is there anything like that in the UK?

I know here in Holland people tend to consider the centre of a town
the square in front of the city hall/church since that's where the
market is/was.

I can't imagine there was a market on the junction so this obviously
doesn't apply in your case. But if that's what was always considered
the centre of the town, leave it there. I'm not sure yu have any other
options...
