/me crosses fingers than we don't see a story of a truck stuck half way down
a track on a hill because his satnav calculated the best avoidance of a
traffic jam was following the track left by an OSM mapper going down a very
steep hill on his pushbike ;)
But on a serious note, Teleatlas/Navteq also have quite a lot of real GPS
tracklog data too, probably captured with some better kit than we have,
combined with lots of pictures/video, not to mention the data they can buy
with the heaps of cash they have... We should be able to get more people
than they have surveying vehicles/teams along with some decent local
knowledge, but, don't underestimate the data these mapping companies have
too... The aims of these companies are different to OSM, make money from
maps vs make a high quality free map, so where OSM updates are only made to
improve the data, Teleatlas/Navteq I'd guess are only making updates to
allow them to keep getting an income from supplying updates, sure it helps
if the updates aren't just made up, but, if they miss something this time
around, they'll be able to charge for it next time...
